I don't think I am going to like the Zaar plot any where as much as seeing the planet staff talking to each other.

I think Superman actually was having a 'good time' with Toyman, probably a moment where he could forget his inner pain. But the slightest nudge brings back how alone he is.
I loved ... and I mean LOVED ... the GL interaction. Hal trying to say things in a measured way, like a caring friend trying to ease into an uncomfortable conversation. And Supes putting on that front as he takes off. That is powerful writing and the Shaner art and expression there is powerful.

And yes, that Rude Perry White page!! Perfect!

Any thoughts on the thing which took Lois away? As for the Planet staff being unprofessional, isn’t Corinne just saying that Goode is going about it the wrong way, she’s not having a pop at Trish, particularly. And I did say that Goode seems dumb, the way she’s going about it. Mind, who’s to say she’s not tried the things Corinne suggests... maybe she’s tried pumping other people, or intends to. The reason she’s asking Trish is likely that she’s been a Planet staffer awhile and, heck, she’s the gossip reporter, you’d think she’d have her ears open.

Most of your questions and problems are to do with what’s happening, what are the motives and means etc... but it’s only the second issue of a six-part mini, and Bendis isn’t exactly known for spilling everything at once. There’s no way, for example, we aren’t going to learn what Rogol Zaar did, within a few weeks. The Lois and Jon mystery is almost certainly going to be simply two pages drawn by Fabok every issue.

But definitely don’t spend your money if you aren’t enjoying this. I don’t think there’s a Bendis book I’ve not dropped... please let this be different!

Thanks again for the great commentary. From last issue's Lois/Jon cliffhanger, the "camera" moved behind them, but we have no new information or any progression. If they're in danger/missing, what's he hanging around for? If they've gone off on an adventure of their own, why is he maxing out on the mopeyness? This isn't a tease, it's just going nowhere.

I have to agree with Corrina Lawson's review: our new Planet staff seem as unprofessional as our new fire fighter, but at least Goode has the potential cover of having a sinister hidden agenda.

I'm not sure how I feel about Zaar's work on Krypton happening off panel. On the one hand, there are so many variables that it leaves the situation of the planet's destruction intact. On the other, there are so many variables that we really don't know what if anything he did, which makes him a bit of a Boba Fett so far (a character with massive build up who turned out to be pretty impotent).

Did Zaar do nothing at all?
Did he discover Krypton was going to explode anyway and let events unfold?
Or perhaps hasten them?
Did he magnify an existing problem into something far worse?

The reason I'm posing these questions, in spite of Gandelo insisting that planets simply do not explode, is of course Jor-El.

Was Jor-El a nutter who was accidentally right because of a genocidal maniac?
Did Jor-El discover what was happening and no one would believe him (list your own multitudinous reasons here)?

Mostly I'd frustrated over the silly Lois mystery. If he thinks they're dead, then let that be known. If they suddenly had a blowout argument before she left on her quest (with Jon to help/protect her) then that's outta left field and Clark has turned into Ross Gellar. There's no seeding here.

There was a lot to like about the issue, as you've covered (particularly the art), but there are questionable story choices. The cover is nice, actually conveys a scene! Just not a scene within the book itself. (And the '80s logo was a bad choice.)

I'm just really disappointed after a promising (though troubled) start last week.

Godzyllahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15158294775397668186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392489189136721402.post-36309016910966701272018-06-04T23:23:11.932+01:002018-06-04T23:23:11.932+01:00jean has been nothing but a class act real polite ...jean has been nothing but a class act real polite but also someone you don't want to get on their bad side and humorous as well with her and Gabby's number guessing game eye hope to see her and Jonathan hang out in the main bookBigShadowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15810527895676384637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392489189136721402.post-33493330497681188762018-06-04T03:07:31.605+01:002018-06-04T03:07:31.605+01:00Well, that's fantastic.Well, that's fantastic.Justin Steinerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09151752685005651437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392489189136721402.post-58626666140403275712018-06-03T11:02:42.178+01:002018-06-03T11:02:42.178+01:00Oh, I’m sure she will. I'm not always a fan of big status quo changes when new writers come on board and with how great Tomasi and Gleason's Superman series was, I was very skeptical. However, it was very solid and the artwork was great. I did just start reading Bendis' New Avengers series for the first time too, thanks to iFanboy, so maybe I'm in a Bendis groove after not reading most of his Marvel work. I really don’t see Superman flirting -I see polite, friendly, professional respect... maybe he’s looking back at her as he’s flying away, maybe he’s looking out towards the city. Whatever, I read it that has been going through a tough time and he’s just shared a sweet, amusing moment, a little light spot among the prevailing gloom, one that could apply with a young guy as easily as a woman. Maybe I’m naive... nah, I’m a proper old tart at times, I love a good flirt, and I don’t see it here.

(Don’t make me wrong, Bendis!)

Maybe people in Rann are long lived... and it’s hard to tell how old a bald chap wearing shades is (and the scene is set just three decades, likely, before he met Adam Strange). With his sup...I'm largely with you on this one. With his superbreath, he's leaning back toward Bronze Age power levels, no? Ms. Moore's reaction to Superman is bothersome, and his response can be seen as flirtatious, oblivious, or resigned as he's used to it, I guess. Flirting is especially unlikely for him as he's missing his wife (and son). We'll see.

I'm still willing to give him the benefit of doubt as the event with Lois and Jon and Clark occurs as a flashback/cliffhanger, and he seems to have several ideas surrounding journalism and the Planet. It's 17% of a story, and I liked enough to keep reading. I'm blaming editorial for the lack of Lois, though. Bendis hasn't been around to see just how troubling this is as relative to Lois' treatment for the last decade or so. It seems like he's setting up something for her.

And someone stop Jim Lee before he designs another character or outfit. Ugh.

Maybe it's Sardath's father? Uncle?

Rogol Zaar seems out of his gourd, and I'm hoping as revisions go that this winds up being that he merely triggered Krypton's destruction a little early (in most versions, Jor does seem surprised that the final quakes have come earlier than he anticipated). Wanting to take out the remaining Kryptonians should bring Kara and Jon into this as well, at some point, though I already hope we don't see more of him in the future.

Basically, I'm encouraged by this first issue, but still cautious. Nice review, Martin.Godzyllahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15158294775397668186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6392489189136721402.post-30521850466919255242018-06-01T23:59:33.518+01:002018-06-01T23:59:33.518+01:00Wherever it originated, Jurgens wrote and shilled ...Wherever it originated, Jurgens wrote and shilled for it, supporting it, in interviews.
